AN ESSENTIAL JOURNEY

As a group of avid wind, wave and outdoor enthusiasts, it is incredibly obvious that we cannot take so much pleasure from nature and destroy it at the same time.

Our passion for riding, technology and bio-mimicry in particular, along with our continual exploration of new and incredible kite and surf locations, inspires our participation in the fight to protect them and to help reverse the decline in the overall environmental health of the planet.

We set out to continually reduce the harm we do as a company, share what we have learnt and inspire others within our industry to do the same.

Below are some of the first steps we are taking in what we believe to be an essential journey.

Carbon Offsetting

One Ton For The Planet

We are excited to be involved in the development of the unique climate park named after the Norwegian explorer and early environmentalist Thor Heyerdahl.

For every kite or board purchased from Airush Kiteboarding we will plant and nurture a mangrove tree to maturity within the Thor Heyederdahl Climate Park.

Each of these Mangroves can potentially absorb over one ton of CO2 over 20 years, incredible trees that protect the low lying coast lines from stormy weather and tsunamis while increasing fish production.

As an example, a traditional surfboard would have a CO2 footprint of around 50kg (More on reducing this below). The overall net benefits are significant from a CO2 perspective; well beyond the footprint of the product manufacture process.

ENTROPY BIO RESINS

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

The Active Wood surf range is constructed using Entropy Super Sap Resin Systems, which reduces their greenhouse gas emissions by 50% over conventional petroleum based epoxies. This resin system replaces petroleum-based raw materials with renewable plant-based materials. The raw materials used in Entropy Resins are co-products or waste products of industrial processes, which do not compete with food sources or displace food-based agriculture.

Along with the raw material benefits, epoxy offers 3.5% to 4.5% tensile elongation at failure compared to 1% to 2% for typical polyester resins. Polyester resins are also more toxic during the lamination and are avoided wherever possible.

Alternative Sandwich Materials

Non-toxic & renewable

Featured in our Active Wood surf range, bamboo sandwich is a non-toxic, renewable material that displaces the amount of cloth and resin used to make a board, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Featured in our Active Carbon surf range, Gurit® Corecell™ M is a structural foam core material using a SAN polymer base, featuring high toughness and impact resistant characteristics. It offers very reliable processing without outgassing and the base materials are PVC free, as opposed to traditional sandwich materials.

EPS Core

A recyclable surfboard core

As a base material for our surfboard cores, EPS can be easily recycled during manufacture and afterwards, while being less harmful during production of the base material.

At the same time the EPS core is typically lighter, allowing us to put a tougher outside skin onto the board to increase the lifespan. EPS requires an epoxy skin where typically epoxy resin has five times the strength of polyester because of its molecular bonding.

UPCYCLE

Reducing landfill waste

Our goal is to remove as much landfill wastes as possible. As a start, we have teamed up with Mafia Bags who have focused on upcycling or repurposing old kites from our customers. These kites are transformed into some useful softgoods that would normally be made from brand new materials.

Going Solar

Reduced energy use

We understand that our incredible location in South Africa creates its power primarily from burning nonrenewable fossil fuels to produce electricity and generate heat, resulting in polluted air, soil and water, while speeding up global warming.

In order to reduce this environmental harm, we renovated a turn of the century building into the Airush headquarters in Cape Town, incorporating progressive insulation to limit the heating and cooling requirements, while using LED lighting. Through installation of solar panels and advanced battery systems, we have reduced our overall electricity demand from the power grid by over 70 percent and our carbon footprint by an estimated 7.5 tons per year.
